Integrating Faith and Anti-Oppressive Work

Faith and anti-oppression do not necessarily go together. Indeed, although many people of faith have actively combated slavery, racism, colonization, classism, sexism and homophobia etc., people of faith have also perpetuated and in some cases initiated these forms of oppression. Using Christianity as an example, Gary Dumbrill shows historically, how the church has both supported and opposed oppression. Examining the ways oppression operates in today’s society, Gary shows that Christians are still found supporting oppression in some instances and opposing oppression in others. Gary argues that people of faith need to more consistently adopt an anti-oppressive stance and he shows how this can be done.
